Foods and drinks you need to try when in Portugal


  • Alheira

The "sausage" alheira is mainly composed of poultry, bread, olive oil, garlic and chili pepper.


  • Pastel de Nata or Pastel de Belém

Similar to a custard tart, the Pastel de Nata is a typical sweet from Portugal. It's outside is made from crispy, flaky pastry and the inside from a creamy, custardy mix, caramelised on top. It is often eaten with cinnamon.


  • Bacalhau

This fish (cod fish) is made in a lot of different ways all accross the country and you can find it pretty much anywhere. Some say there are over 1,000 ways of serving it.


  • Polvo a lagareiro

It is an octopus dish with smashed potatoes in a herbed garlic oil.

  • Caldo Verde

Kind of a kale soup, caldo verde means green soup, is a traditional soup made with potatoes, chouriço sausage, and thinly sliced kale.


  • Bagaceira

Is a clear and colorless Portuguese spirit distilled from grape pomace, made by winemakers.


  • Queijada

Is a type of sweet, it is a small sweet prepared using cheese, eggs, milk, and powdered sugar.


  • Vinho do Porto

Also known as Port Wine, is a sweet, fortified wine from Portugal. It is most commonly enjoyed as a dessert wine because of it's sweetness. It's name comes from it's region, Porto.


  • Sardinha

Sardinha is sardine, the tinned version of it can be found all over the country, the grilled version of the fish is a traditional simple meal. The two most common meals you’ll find are the sardine served simply or as a part of a sardinhada.


  • Leitão

Dish of piglet that's roasted and basted until the flesh becomes creamy and the skin develops its typical crunchiness.
