The Panorama Route in South Africa

Recently we have been to South Africa and on our way from Johannesburg to Phalaborwa we decided to take the Panorama Route, known for it's amazing stops.

Was it worth it? 100%. We saw beautiful views and waterfalls and in this post, we are going to share the whole experience with you, in the order we visited them, to optimize our time and route and the price we had to pay to enter each place (prices from September 2021).

  1. Mac Mac Falls

This waterfall is very pretty and has easy access from the parking lot, with only a short trail to get to the view point. Unfortunatelly, there are bars around the place we stand to see it, which makes the view and the photos not as good as they could be.

On the way to the view point there are several stalls selling hand crafted items, typical from South Africa. The prices are pretty fair and you can and should bargain if you want to pay less for them.

To enter the whole area you have to pay R15 per person.

2. The Pinnacle Rock

The pinncle rock is a huge rock formation that is very interesting to see. There is a way around some part of it so you can see it from different angles. Again, it is quite easy to get to the view point, walking just a little bit.

It seamed like there are people selling things there too, but there was no one on the day we visited.

To enter the area you have to pay R20 per person.

3. God's Window

On this one, to get to the view point you will have to climb a few flights of stairs made of rocks. Most people are able to do it, but we have seen people with difficulty to climb up, in that case, you can just stop as many times as you need to take a breath.

The view is very pretty and we believe it is worth the visit. On the parking lot there are also stalls selling hand crafted items.

To get in, you also have to pay R20 per person.

4. Lisbon Falls

By far, my favorite. These waterfalls are simply beautiful! There are a few view points to watch them from different angles, and if you wish, you can go all the way down to see it. We chose not to go down due to the time we had and because we believe the best views are from above them.

Once again, there were people selling stuff near the parking lot.

The price to enter the are is R15 per person.

5. Bourke's Luck Potholes

This place looks like a scenery from a movie, it is crazy! It is a geological sight, where the erosion made it look like it does. There are trails and bridges so you can move around them, which makes it quite easy to walk and doesn't demand much effort.

This place is the one with the biggest infrastructure, with bathrooms, an info center and again the stalls. We found the prices in these stalls very fair and one of the best to buy gifts.

To enter there is a R65 fee per person.

6. Lowveld View

This place is quite easy to walk around, with little ups and downs. It has beautiful views of the Blyde River Canyon and the Blyde Dam. There are quite a few good spots for pictures on the area, so move around a bit to also see it from a few angles.

This point is for free!!

7. Three Rondavels

There three mountain tops highlight the view of the view of the Blyde River Canyon and behind them you can also see the mountains, which is beautiful.

It is also easy to walk around there.

To enter there is a R35 fee per person.

There are also more places to stop and see along the Panorama Route, but we decided to go to these ones because they attracted us the most and it was so worth it, we loved it.

So, if you have the time to go through Panorama Route instead of other routes and to spend some time admiring nature, we definitely recommend that you do!

Let us know what you think about these places!
